Sh*t My Dad Says, a humble book review…

At first glance Im sure many people will assume this book is just a collection of all the tweets the author originally tweeted. I wont be the first to admit I assumed the exact same thing.

However. This book is much more than a few funny one liners from an a sharp witty old man. No. This book also contains the story of growing up in an average home, except you’re living with a high class comedian for a father, a comedian who doesn’t even know it yet.

This book is full of family stories, truly hilarious and emotionally deep anecdotes that make it fantastic read. Every time the author recalls an upsetting memory he instantly brings a smile to your face, with the quick wit of his hilarious father.

I read this book in less than a few days. Not because its length, theres plenty here to read. It was more the fact I couldn’t put the damned thing down.

A fantastic insight into our own family lives through the somewhat more dramatic and caricature like life of another.

The Invention of Lying
I was at a loss with what to do with this evening. I opened up the iTunes movie store and after a good 30 minutes of browsing I settled on renting The Invention of Lying. I shan’t ramble on about the storyline and such, instead I intend to quickly provide you with my two pennies.
The film is a wonderful comedy packed with laughs and tears. Apart from one rather upsetting scene the film is wonderfully light hearted in tackling its subject matter. Ricky Gervias is now the only man who can lie in a world where there is nothing but honesty. Ricky plays a wimpy shell of a man named Mark who writes crappy little unexciting lectures which are then recorded as distributed as movies. In a world where you can’t even embroid the  truth movies appear to be rather dull. This movie is not one of them.
Marks life takes a dramatic turn for the better when he discovers his ability to lie. From here on in the film gets nothing but funnier, Gervais’ sarcasm suits the part fantastically as well as his persona and wit. The only downside to this was the fact I was constantly reminded of David Brent, the character he portrayed in his British sitcom series The Office. The fact Gervais dressed in work attire and worked in an office similar to the one in the sitcom probably didn’t help the connotations and assumptions.
This film may not be winning any awards for its less than spectacular soundtrack, or its lack of cinematography, but if you’re looking for a film packed with laughs that can be enjoyed without any effort on your part then this ladies and gentlemen, is the film for you.
